Methods of making Iznik çini ceramics
The production techniques of Iznik ceramics had several particularities:
it is a siliceous earth (up to 80% quartz) with the addition of a lead-rich frit, made of crushed glass, which allows cooking at a lower temperature.
the earth is then covered with a very white coating (a slip), which will mask the natural color of the clay and serve as a support for the decoration which will be painted on the ceramic
Finally, Iznik ceramics are covered with a transparent glaze
the ceramic pieces then underwent a single firing, generally in brick kilns
Iznik ceramics can designate several types of objects: there are many dishes, but also bottles and carafes, vases, bowls, and of course tiles.
